About the academy
NFD Fashion Academy was founded with a single conviction: Nigerian and African fashion education has been either inaccessible, informal, or both. We set out to change that with a structured curriculum grounded in Ankara, Adire, and Aso-oke work, delivered online at a price that does not require relocation or a loan.
Why we built this
Formal fashion education in Nigeria has long been concentrated in a handful of cities, inside institutions whose fees and schedules exclude most of the people who want to learn. The alternative, informal apprenticeships, pass on skill but rarely pass on the structural knowledge of pattern drafting, garment finishing, or the business of running an atelier.
NFD Fashion Academy was built to sit between those two options. Online delivery means you study where you are. Structured modules mean you finish with knowledge you can name, demonstrate, and build on. The curriculum does not treat Ankara, Adire, and Aso-oke as exotic specialisms bolted onto a Western sewing syllabus. They are the curriculum.
We are not trying to produce copies of European fashion graduates. We are training the next generation of Nigerian designers to work with African textiles fluently, professionally, and on their own terms.

Physical presence
Online-first does not mean online-only. Our pilot branches give enrolled students access to a physical practicum space for garment fitting, fabric handling, and supervised finishing work.
Pilot branch
Our Lagos branch serves students across the metropolitan area and hosts regular Aso-oke and Adire practicum sessions.
Pilot branch
The Abuja branch opened to serve the Federal Capital Territory cohort, with dedicated studio time for pattern drafting and garment finishing.
Growing reach
We are building a franchise model that will let trained facilitators open NFD practicum branches in their own cities under the academy's curriculum and quality standards. The online course remains the academic backbone. Franchise branches provide the physical studio access that some learners need to complete advanced garment work.
This is not a licensing scheme. Franchise facilitators complete the full NFD curriculum themselves and are assessed before they teach. The aim is to extend physical reach across Nigeria without diluting the standard that the pilot branches established.

Curriculum philosophy
Textile literacy
Students learn to read, select, and work with the dominant African fabrics at a technical level, not just an aesthetic one. Weight, weave, drape, and finish are all in scope.
Technical skill
The core technical modules cover flat-pattern drafting from measurements, grading for Nigerian body proportions, and the finishing standards that separate production-quality garments from informal work.
Applied practice
Each paid course ends with a practicum submission, assessed against a published rubric. Students who pass receive an NFD certificate that names the specific course and skills completed.
